Instagram Brows vs. Real Life: What the Before and After Pictures

Do Not Tell You About Permanent Makeup

If you've done some research about permanent makeup, chances are you've already spent hours on Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, or TikTok browsing through the beautiful transformations of others. And it is understandable – stunning before and after photos catch the eye and give someone a glimpse of how amazing permanent makeup could look like on their face.

However, there is a lot more to the before-and-after photos than meets the eye. And that is what I want to talk about today.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the world of permanent makeup is that a picture taken immediately after the procedure shows the final result. But it is not true – it is just the beginning of the healing process.

As a permanent makeup artist, I love high-quality photography, too. But when evaluating my own work, I am thinking about how those brows will heal over the coming weeks, months, and years, not about the result on the first day of the procedure.

And that is why it is crucial to know the difference.

Fresh Permanent Makeup Is Just the Start

Right after a procedure, the permanent makeup usually looks darker, more defined, and harsher than it does at the end of the healing process. Swelling, fresh pigment, and inflammatory process in the skin all contribute to it.

But nothing like this is an abnormal situation.

The fresh brows photograph beautifully because every stroke is sharp, the pigment lies close to the skin's surface, and the professional lighting catches every detail. Those are the photos that are usually posted on the web, and they look stunning.

But there is one thing that those photos do not tell us.

With the progress of healing, the skin starts restoring itself, and as it happens, the pigment gets softened, the edges of strokes look more natural, and the entire look transforms into the one that will become the result.

It is an absolutely normal process.

And if someone knows about it, then they will be able to set realistic expectations from the procedure and prevent themselves from worrying about their look during the healing process.

Everyone Has His or Her Own Way to Heal

One of the questions I get asked quite often is, "Will my brows look exactly like the brows in this photo?"

And the straightforward answer is – no, but it doesn't mean anything bad.

Each person has his or her own skin, with different oil production, pore sizes, thickness, level of collagen, sun exposure, skincare routine, previously done permanent makeup, and so on. All of this influences the way pigment settles in the skin.

Even two people who got the same technique done by the same artist using the same pigment could heal differently.

That is why the consultations are so important – we do not recommend techniques only by the photo of brows. We examine our clients' skin, their lifestyles, and their personal goals to suggest the best solution possible.

We aim to create beautiful brows for everyone individually, not to recreate someone's eyebrows.

Photos You See On Social Media May Deceive You

The rise of social media has changed our perception of many cosmetic procedures, including permanent makeup. Professional lighting, camera angle, ring light, editing, filters, the camera itself – all of this can influence the look of permanent makeup on the web.

Brows photographed under studio lighting can look different in natural lighting, and even the angle of the face of the client can make eyebrows look differently shaped and dense.

It doesn't mean that artists are cheating the clients. It is just another reminder that photography freezes only one moment under the certain conditions.

Permanent makeup should never be evaluated only by one picture.

Why Healed Results Are Better than Fresh Results

One of the first questions I encourage my prospective clients to ask to any permanent makeup artist is, "Can I see the healed results?"

The fresh work shows the artist's technical skills, but healed one demonstrates the ability of consistency.

Healed photos demonstrate how pigment looks after the healing process and give an idea about what to expect in the future.

The artist who can demonstrate beautiful healed work consistently proves that he or she understands the skin, behavior of pigments, how to select the techniques, and how to plan the entire process, not only to make nice before-and-after photographs.

For me, healed work has always been a priority.

When I recommend some technique, select pigment, or design a shape, I think not only about the day of the procedure but also about the healing process, how pigment will settle in the skin, how it will age, and whether it will complement my client's face features in the long term.

Choosing an Artist Requires Deeper Conversations

Of course, it is reasonable to bring some photos to the consultation to show your preferred style and design.

But they should not serve as the basis for your procedure.

The best permanent makeup is a unique, individual design created with knowledge of the skin, natural hair growth, lifestyle, and long-term goals.

An experienced artist should know that selecting the technique is not the only step. As important as it is to choose the right technique, even more important is knowing when it is not the best option.

And very often, the most successful work is not the boldest one – it is the most natural and subtle.

Conclusion

Social media has opened new opportunities for permanent makeup. And it is great since now it is easier to find a good artist and become interested in the procedure.

But it is crucial to remember that a before-and-after photo captures only a brief moment in the process.

Beautiful permanent makeup is not about how dramatic it looks on the very first day. It is about how it heals, how well it looks on your face and complements it, and how confident you feel wearing it daily.

When researching permanent makeup, do not hesitate to ask questions. Require healed results, learn about the consultation process, ask about the experience and why the artist recommends certain techniques.

Those questions will show you much more than photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do permanent makeup brows look dark after the procedure?

Fresh pigment lies close to the skin surface, and some mild swelling makes the brows look darker and more defined.

How long does it take for the permanent makeup to heal?

Initial healing takes some weeks, though everyone heals differently. Healed results develop gradually as the skin heals.

Should I compare my healing brows to the Instagram photos?

Not necessarily. Every person has their own unique skin with different characteristics, and lighting, editing, camera angle, and healing process affect the appearance of the permanent makeup in the photos.

What is more important: healed results or fresh results?

Both are important, but healed results show how pigment behaves in the skin and how it appears after healing.

What should I ask before choosing a permanent makeup artist?

Ask to see healed work, learn about the consultation process, ask about experience with the different skin types, and choose an artist who can recommend techniques based on your skin, not the current trends.
